ACTIVITY 1-1: Explore NASA Educational Products

Many educational products have been reviewed and approved according to NASA educational criteria. The following site lists educational products you might want to review. Educational products vary in format. They include web sites, lesson plans, lithographs, bookmarks, images, live simulations, and CD-ROMS. Most of the approved products listed at this site apply to the development of a more detailed design, such as a lesson plan or complete curriculum. The list does not include the NASA-approved products that would require you to purchase the product in order to review it.

NASA Approved Education Products

Choose a product that complements your potential product design. It helps to review these products from several perspectives. For example, view products with a similar focus (Earth science, life science) and for a similar age/grade level (elementary, middle school, high school).

Inquiry-Based Learning Environment
Well-designed, online, inquiry-based learning environments are planned, developed, and assessed around a set of features that facilitate inquiry and learning. One of NASA’s exemplary inquiry-based learning environments is the Student Observation Network. It promotes student inquiry by providing a framework around which students investigate a theme or topic using an inquiry-based approach. This well-designed web site provides a set of features that facilitate inquiry and learning. Review this site and discuss your observations with your team members.

Student Observation Network

The Student Observation Network contains the project design components you need to identify using the Virtual Design Center steps. For example, as you see from a review of this site, an introduction explains the module process to a teacher/facilitator; each module is thoroughly presented and supported by tools, resources, and tutorials; and the national standards have been identified.

While you explore and discuss the Student Observation Network, consider the features of the environment that facilitate inquiry and learning. Discuss:

  • The characteristics of each feature.

  • How those characteristics support and guide inquiry-based learning.
