Activity 6-1: Explore advanced learning technologies

Various kinds of learning technologies are available for free. Here, we selected several that have been studied empirically and found to enhance learning experiences. We organized them into three categories: modeling and visualization tools, reflection tools, and inquiry support tools. Explore the learning technologies below and think about how their features might help learners address the difficult components of your inquiry-based classroom activity:

Learning Technologies

Features

Educational Use

Modeling and visualization tools

Data and systems modeling

Data visualizations

Tools for data production, analysis, and prediction

For more advanced inquiry

Reflection tools

Representation of thinking and argumentation process

Tools for concept mapping and defining relationships among ideas

Support for thinking process and team-based research

Inquiry support tools

Structure for inquiry process

Tools for following structured inquiry

For more fundamental support for inquiry process

Incorporate learning technologies to help learners in areas that are hard or impossible to accomplish without technology. Read the following research-based design principles that exemplify the use of a reflection tool in support of argumentation and an inquiry support tool for expert-like thinking process.

Identify which tool(s) would fit in your activity design. Focus on the aspects of your inquiry-based classroom activity in which learners would most benefit from the support of one or more learning technologies. Each category of tool provides a different type of support. Consider:

  • Modeling and visualization tools. What kinds of data, if any, will learners need to examine as part of the investigation? How can learning technologies like modeling and visualization tools support this?

  • Reflection tools. How will learners develop their ideas throughout the investigation or argue their understanding with others? Will reflection tools be appropriate for your activity?

  • Inquiry support tools. Will learners need additional support for their inquiry process? If so, how can the inquiry support tools be used for your investigation?

Deliverable 6-1. Examine the tools you might incorporate into the design and think about their features that help learners address the difficult or impossible components of your inquiry-based activity. Jot down your initial thoughts on areas difficult or impossible to accomplish without the support of one or more learning technologies. You will use your note from this activity to finish activity 6-2.

Continue to Activity 6-2.
